Extended warranties are usually very inexpensive and can save you thousands in the future. Some can even cover extra costs that result, such as cost of food that spoils when your fridge dies. It's simple and inexpensive to purchase extended warranties and one of the smartest ways to protect your investment.

Appliances can be large, heavy and expensive. You probably don't have the special tools or expertise needed to fix them in a crisis. If you can spare a few thousand dollars without batting an eyelash for new appliances should they break tomorrow, don't buy a warranty. But if you're like most of us, protect yourself by purchasing inexpensive extended warranties when you buy a new product and save yourself big money in the long run.

Failed within year 1 - Impossible warranty

ilomax 10/8/2019

We purchased our first house and was excited to see brand new matching Amana appliances; refrigerator / dishwasher / stove / microwave. We knew that these appliances weren't top of the line but expected much better quality than this. Within the first year the refrigerator started to freeze everything for about 2 weeks. We messed with the temperature adjustment, rearranged the food so vents weren't blocked... everything we could think of. After the two weeks of trying to figure out why things were freezing, the refrigerator stopped cooling and the freezer was only reaching 34 degrees. We contacted Amana regarding the factory warranty because this refrigerator was under a year old. We submitted a claim and was told Amana would locate a certified repair facility to diagnose the issue. Multiple days pass and we receive an email essentially stating, "We're very sorry but we can't find a certified facility to do the work, so it's up to you to find someone and we'll reimburse the cost of the visit". Living in a somewhat rural area (30 min from a big city with repair facilities), it is not easy to find a repair facility that will come out. The only repair facility Amana recommends in the area, apparently does not work on Amana appliances. We were left to deal with it on our own... Pretty poor customer service but we need a refrigerator so lets jump through this hoop. Finally, we find someone that will come out to diagnose the issue... "Ahh, finally we may have a working refrigerator soon". Tech comes out, does his diagnostic and determines that there is a sealed system leak (refrigerant leak) and recommends parts to replace. We submitted the invoice, just like Amana asked and waited... and waited... and waited... Eventually we get an email that says the invoice has been approved and we'll be receiving a prepaid card for the service invoice. We wait thinking we'll hear from an Amana representative about the next step. Days pass and no communication. Okay, time to call Amana again... I wait on hold for a customer care representative. Once on the phone with a representative I'm told that our invoice was approved and we'll be reimbursed for the service call. I explain I already knew that, I'm calling to figure out when and how the refrigerator is going to be fixed. I'm told that there weren't part numbers on the invoice and they're waiting for those. I asked if anyone was going to tell us that more information was needed to procced and am basically told "No" and that submitting information correctly was on us and the technician". Keep in mind our original invoice was approved and we're going to receive a prepaid card. Strike two on the customer service for Amana. I tell the representative that it is very difficult and time consuming to get someone out to our area since Amana could find anyone. I'm told "It's not our problem that you live in a remote area". I get off the phone, mind blown from the poor level of customer service but… I still need a refrigerator so I'll jump through this hoop. The tech send over a parts list with the needed parts highlighted and we send that to Amana. Okay, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, we'll have a refrigerator again soon! So we wait… and wait… no call or directions for proceed with the repair. I call Amana again, wait for a call back within the estimated time of 4 minutes. 15 minutes later I get a call back from a gentleman who seems helpful and show empathy so I'm starting to feel better about finally finishing this process. He states that Amana is waiting on an invoice with part numbers on it for the needed parts. I told him I already sent in the invoice and it was approved, we also sent over the needed parts list. The representative acknowledges that the invoice and part number were received and that he's not quite sure why this isn't getting handled. I sit on hold while a supervisor is questioned about what is going on. After holding for a while, the gentlemen gets back on the phone and tells me that even though the invoice was sent in and approved and a parts list was sent over that the repair facility needs to make another invoice with the part numbers on it. I ask, "can't you just staple the parts list to the invoice that states what is needed?" Response, "No, the invoice needs to have the part numbers on it". Another hoop to jump through… At this point I can't stand behind Amana / Whirlpool products, their warranty is so convoluted that most consumers probably give up and Amana doesn't have to warranty anything, their products fail within the first year and customer service is poor at best. I really hope Amana steps up and does what's right… REPLACE THE REFRIGERATOR WITH A MANUFACTURER DEFECT. At this point I'd even spend time loading up the refrigerator, driving an hour to the store, exchanging it, driving back another hour and setting it up myself. If this product, with a manufacturer defect and under warranty isn't replace, I will never purchase another Amana product or refer this brand to friends or family. I will gladly update this review if Amana does the right thing and takes care of their customer.

Loud and Too Cold

Cezanna79 9/3/2019

This fridge was loud from day 1. And I could never put it at Reccoended Temp because it was always too cold. After only 2 years it is malfunctioning so that it freezes everything at the warmest temp. The repair man says it is not worth fixing. What a waste of money and resources.

Utilitarian, Poor Temp Controls, and Prop 65

Cadence 11/2/2018

1) The design of the Amana fridge is insipid and utilitarian, particularly the exterior. 2) Temperature control is limited. Instead of a continuous wheel (which older fridges perfected), the Amana fridge has a button beside 4 lights with confusing labels: "Cold, (unlabeled), Recommended, Cold." What is the difference between the first and last Cold lights? And what is the unlabeled light? We get exactly one clue: "All Lights on for Coldest Settings." The Use and Care Guide is lazily written: "Press the temp button" implies press the center of the square button. But how do we "toggle" this button? No mention anywhere. By experiment I found it means press the right edge the button. 3) Re Prop65: Whirlpool claims "Even chemicals used within the limits of national regulations and found not hazardous in the quantities associated with the product may require a warning just because the chemical is present." (Source: Whirlpool webpage "What is the Proposition 65 Warning I see in the Use and Care Guide?" at https://producthelp.whirlpool.com/What_is_the_proposition_65_warning_I_see_in_the_Use_and_Care_Guide%3F). This attempt to comfort customers is self-serving, and a lie. When a business includes a California Proposition 65 Warning, it is because a product uses chemicals which equal or exceed the "safe harbor" levels. Businesses in fact are DISCOURAGED from issuing a blanket "just in case" warning, because that would carry no real information for consumers -- it would be meaningless. For a very readable account, see: "P65 Warnings: FAQ for Businesses" at https://www.p65warnings.ca.gov/frequently-asked-questions-businesses Quoting that CA.gov page: "Determining anticipated levels of exposure to listed chemicals can be very complex. Although a business has the burden of proving a warning is not required, a business is discouraged from providing a warning that is not necessary and instead should consider consulting a qualified professional if it believes an exposure to a listed chemical may not require a Proposition 65 warning."

Died after 18 months

Unhappy customer 6/4/2018

I bought this less than 18 months ago and it has died. Fridge froze everything on Thursday and on Saturday the whole unit was basically a light up storage box. No more cooling or freezing. It was fine while it was working, but now it's outside the warranty period and I have to buy a new fridge. Will not buy Amana again.

Does its job

Alex in SoFla 12/25/2017

We had a fridge that finally gave out after 25 years and we are very happy with this as a replacement. It is quiet and the glass shelving is easy to clean. We are saving over $15 a month on our electricity bill as well compared to our old fridge!

Noisy

8/16/2017

This fridge came with my new house. It was brand new, but it is super loud. The buzzy noise is making me crazy. It hums about 50% of the time. It is very basic. I don't like the shelf arrangement. There aren't many places for tall containers like milk and orange juice, and the shelves are less adjustable than on other fridges. There is no meat and cheese drawer. I would not have chosen this fridge.

Fantastic Refrigerator

8/15/2017

This is a great refrigerator. My old refrigerator was not working properly and I had just accepted some of the performance issues. The new Amana refrigerator does a fantastic job of cooling. I chose an option without front handles and love the convenience.

Why I like Amana

7/5/2017

We are very satisfied with our Amana product. This is not my first Amana product in my life my Mom & Dad brought an Amana upright freezer back in the mid 50's they used it for years until they needed a bigger freezer. Their's went to my brother to use he used until he had no more use for a freezer then it came to me. I put it out in my garage where we could go there an get what we wanted since we were living in a small house' Then when we were gone one day someone broke into the garage took what we had in the freezer an they thought the cover at the bottom was for storage left it half off the door wouldn't close so it thaw out and the water ran down on the motor an shorted it out. This was in the early 90's so the insurance wouldn't pay much on it because of it's age.

Amana 18 cu. ft. Refrigerator

9/15/2016

We purchased this refrigerator about a month ago, and it is performing up to our expectations. We had a different Amana in the kitchen for 25 years and decided to replace it with another Amana. Wish it had a light in the freezer, though. I like that it's Energy-rated.

Amana refrigerator purchased a week & 1/2 ago.

9/4/2016

Purchased this Amana & got it up & running a couple of days ago. So far things seem to be working just fine. We did get the H.H. Gregg 5 year (extended) warranty coverage. For a basic refrigerator, is seems to be more than sufficient. Hopefully things will go well (for years to come) with our new Amana!

Makes a ringing sound while running

4/25/2016

I just got this on the weekend and it makes a very annoying ringing sound the whole time it runs (it's like a ringing in your ear sound) that can be heard up to 8 feet away. Very annoying...a ringing sound is not a normal refrig. sound (I didn't get with icemaker either) The refrig. manual listed normal sounds like humming, popping, etc.. but this is an irritating/constant ringing, it's ridiculous! I've had many refrigerators in the past and my neighbors with newer refrigs. don't have this sound in theirs. I contacted Amana and now I have to put in a warranty request...this should not have left the factory with this sound. Temp controls are not that great either (only 3 choices)
